Why you won't reach your goals using exercises from social media
Is this title a little harsh? Yes, no, maybe!
You see, the thing is…it can be really hard to get the WHOLE picture when you are using exercises (even workouts) from social media. Here are 3 reasons why:
Reason #1 they are part of a bigger programme
One of the most important considerations in any kind of training is progressive overload. In simple terms, this means, gradually adding more challenge.
And might look like
- heavier load
- less rest time
- more time under tension
- pause reps
- more reps
- more sets
- more challenging positions
- more complex movement
- more speed
- more distance
It is the progressive overload that helps you to progress and ultimately takes you from where you are, to where you want to be.
Reason #2 They might not include the HOW
The fitness industry has led us to believe that there is a magic set of exercises! And if we find this magic set of exercise and do them, we’ll get the outcome we want. Now, this is true to some extent but we also need to consider the HOW.
HOW you do an exercise is important because:
- the HOW can create more pressure or better balance pressure
- it can influence your symptoms
- it helps you troubleshoot if symptoms crop up
- you can apply your strategies to other movements (which means you aren’t confined to a limited set of exercises)
Reason 3 they aren't based on your unique body
One of the benefits of 1:1 work is that programs can be personalised to your body, goals, lived experience and pelvic floor function. In addition they often assume that progressions are linear. But when you work 1:1 your programme is as unique as your body. Plus you can progress some exercises quicker than others
